What is spirituality?

Is it a religion? A practice? A guru with the answers?
An initiation, a retreat, a ceremony, a meditation method, or a “magic” potion that promises transformation?

For a long time, I thought it had to be one of those things. I believed spirituality began the moment I found the right teacher, the right technique, the right retreat — anything that would finally unlock the truth. And every time I thought I’d found “the thing,” I eventually realized I had just stepped into another version of someone else’s idea of awakening.

Some of these experiences can seem like the answer — but they often mislead you more than they guide you.
The danger is that these external forms can feel so meaningful, so intense, and so convincing that we start believing the path is out there, instead of in here.
We can mistake discipline for depth. We can confuse someone else’s certainty for our own truth. And without realizing it, we give others the power to define our lives.

Even meditation, which can be a powerful tool, becomes a trap if we treat it like a performance, a competition, or a routine we do because someone told us it’s “the right way.” The moment we practice anything to meet an expectation rather than to meet ourselves, we drift further from the whole point.

The issue isn’t seeking support or learning from others; it’s assuming that someone else holds the map to our inner world.

“You have your own life to live. Stop looking outside yourself.”

Rumi

Spirituality begins when you stop handing your clarity to others.
It begins when you sit with your own thoughts long enough to understand what’s real and what’s just conditioning.
It begins when you recognize that no method, no master, and no ceremony can do the part that belongs only to you. If you listen to yourself, you’ll find what’s best for you to do and no one else can tell you that.

The doorway has always been inside you.
Everything else — meditation, mentors, rituals — can help you walk toward it, or distract you from it.
What matters is whether they bring you closer to your own awareness, or further away.
